In Pirate treasure hunt, the learner is immersed as a character in a game-like world. Pirate Jack is presented with obstacles, options and key points where decisions need to be made and problems solved before he can reach his treasure.
Students analyse problems using a range of strategies, including interpreting clues, intuition, and trial and error. Students solve problems using literacy and numeracy skills.
Variety of learning methods
Guiding our bumbling hero Pirate Jack and mentored by his trusty parrot, students develop the understanding of the following concepts:
- that a range of strategies exists for solving problems
- that strategies can be combined in different ways
- that attending to clues can reduce trial and error
- that information from different sources can be combined to construct meaning and solve problems
- addressing logical problems as well as basic procedural and intuitive problems
- addressing novel problems
- building on a sense of logic
- strategy-building – looking for a pattern, using trial and error, modelling, considering possibilities and outcomes, making calculations
- using play and exploration to coach children into a strategy
