Maths 5 Learning Objects: Viewfinder and Photohunt

These objects were originally developed in Shockwave. The Le@rning Federation contracted Millipede to redevelop these objects in Flash, overhaul the design and ensure adherence to rigourous technical specifications and accessiblity requirements.
Viewfinder
Students explore visual perspectives of solids such as cylinders, cones and cuboids, to match a 2D photo of a group of 3D objects taken from a different viewpoint.
Students need to identify the relative positions of the solids by comparing 2D outlines and colours. Each level is focusing on a different aspect of spatial perception. The user must rearrange the objects on a base grid until the view matches the original photo.
A human mentor and a photography studio setting was introduced as part of our new design concept, along with a complete redesign of the layout and user interface, to help create a more effective and engaging experience for the user.
Photo hunt
Similar in concept to Viewfinder, students explore visual perspectives of solids such as cylinders, cones and cuboids, to match a 2D photo of a group of 3D objects taken from a different viewpoint.
Students must rotate a base grid until it matches that of the original photo.
Our new design featured a park setting and digital camera viewfinder screen. The user is tasked with photographing a sculpture (our 3D objects) from different angles to match an existing 2D photo.
These learning object series were developed for Mathematics students, year level: 4 – 9.
Both of these objects were developed before 3D engines started being released for Flash, so the translating of a 2D environment to give a 3D illusion whilst remaining fully interactive was a real challenge.
