Just like me introduces students to a range of different children from varying racial and cultural backgrounds.
Students are prompted to select their favourite items in a range of categories (lunches, musical instruments, recreational past times, pets and places), and compare these with the preferences of the featured children.
Students can repeat this activity as often as they wish before guessing what the other children’s favourite things are. Finally, students are prompted to write about the similarities and differences they share with one or more of the children.
Complex subject matter treated sensitively
Just like me develops student understanding of the following concepts:
- that children from different backgrounds share things in common
- that differences also exist between different people
- that we need to be aware of stereotypes
This learning object was a challenge for all involved. The visual style is cartoony, and reflects cultural characteristics without stereotyping. Considerable research and consultation was undertaken to ensure the characters are represented free from bias.
Exploring cultures and backgrounds
The characters across the series include children from various backgrounds:
- Kaneisha is an Indigenous girl from the Darwin region
- Sammy has Asian heritage
- Rose is Caucasian
- Dawit is an Ethiopian boy
- Zeina is a Middle Eastern girl
- Mana is a Maori boy
Just like me was developed for Early Years students, from Prep to Year 2, and was developed based on the Learning Object Design document developed by Millipede in conjunction with DK2.
