ARTEMIS (Art Educational Multiplayer Interactive Space) is a realtime, multi-user virtual world imbued with personalities, text information, objects, artefacts and structures related to the culture, art, and design of Ancient Greece.

Innovative concepts for eLearning

ARTEMIS is used as a tertiary level learning tool to augment the teaching of first year Art & Design history at Monash Unversity. It serves as a catalyst, a reference hub, and a motivational, engaging experience.

ARTEMIS represents a unique vision for eLearning – a step beyond static, single user digital resources, and a giant leap from the dull, text-heavy educational management applications deployed in many universities.

Creative technology

ARTEMIS comprises a server-side Java application coupled with a Flash game engine, providing an always on, realtime, multi-user learning environment.

This enables dynamic, realtime peer-to-peer collaboration from within the browser, with no additional client software requirements.

In user testing, students were found to use the instant chat feature to help each other progress through the environment – a mode of learning which ARTEMIS actively encourages.

Significant technical obstacles were overcome in creating a smooth, seamless application that performs well on standard hardware despite its graphic and data intensive nature.

Exploration, discovery and experience

As the user travels through the ARTEMIS environment, they encounter historical and mythological characters, are exposed to the culture, social climate and architecture of the era, and are challenged with quizzes and exploratory quests.
